Q&A With Children’s Author Susan Day

Today I’d like you to meet Susan Day, a canine behaviourist and a storyteller. She comes to us from down under (why is that so much fun to say?) I love it when I meet fellow children’s authors who’ve got a dog as a main character, as I do. So please extend a warm welcome to Susan and Astro!

Q. Please tell us a little bit about yourself and your books.

A. Hi! I’m Susan and I live in a country town of Australia where there are more kangaroos than people!

I started writing the Astro’s Adventures series to encourage children to take good care of their pets. That was six years ago, and I’ve just published the 12th book in the series.

All of the characters in the Astro’s Adventures books are based on real cats and dogs. I took their personalities and over-exaggerated them. Then I created some pretty zany plots and put them into these. After that, it was just a matter of sitting back and seeing what the characters did next.

All I can say, is there have been some pretty zany adventures with lots of twists and turns. Here’s my latest Astro book, The Lucky Leprechaun.

Lucky Leprechaun
Tricked into going to Ireland by a wicked leprechaun, Astro and the gang are forced to find the King’s special pet. Only this pet is not the type of animal any dog should be made to save. It’s wicked and cruel and can make you obey its every command just by purring! That’s right – the dogs are sent all over Ireland to save a cat! On the way, they encounter a whole host of magical creatures, stunning scenery, and not to mention, a very polite donkey.

Q. Tell us something about your greatest success.

A. I live in a small country I have been lucky enough to meet many of the children who read my books. One of my greatest successes was when the children at the local school were asked to write about someone who inspired them, and a young girl chose me! You can’t get better credentials than that!

Altogether I’ve published nearly 20 books, so that’s quite a success in itself.

Q. What has been your biggest challenge?

A. The biggest challenge I have faced so far is developing the determination not to give up. After the first three years, however, I found that I enjoyed writing and spending time with the characters of Astro’s Adventures so much, I knew I was hooked!

Q. What are your plans for the future?

A. I have been studying content marketing and website creation for the past 12 months. I’ve learnt how important it is to establish a solid online presence to promote my books. This includes websites, blogs, book trailers and using social media to create a following and increase sales. I am putting these things into practice now.

As well, I have decided to offer what I have learned to other authors. If any of your followers are interested they can find out more about this very useful series of free goodies at: http://www.getonlinefast.net Just check out the Authors page.

  1. Thank you, Ladies!
I enjoyed learning something new about Susan Day. I knew she was a wonderful writer with a rich knowledge in dog behavior. But now she’s helping aspiring authors too – this is precious.
